A portable electric fence includes tent poles adapted by length and weight to be carried by a hiker. A pole anchor is provided for each of the tent poles. Each pole anchor has a primary body made of an electrically insulating material. The primary body has a pole receiving receptacle adapted to receive and support one of the tent poles in a substantially vertical orientation. Means are provided for fixing the primary body to a ground surface. Conductive wire is provided along with insulated clips for securing the conductive wire to the tent poles. A power source is provided for electrically energizing the conductive wire.
