This invention relates to parts of an internal combustion engine or the like and, more particularly, to a reinforced ceramic matrix composite exhaust manifold (10) for internal combustion engine applications. The present invention solves the problems of failure due to thermal shock, damage from minor impacts, erosion, engine weight, and the like. A method of making the exhaust manifold (10) comprises the steps of forming a liner of a castable monolithic ceramic material containing pores, filling the pores with a pre- ceramic polymer resin, coating reinforcing fibers with an interface material, forming a mixture of a pre-ceramic polymer resin and reinforcing fibers coated with the interface material, forming an exhaust manifold shaped structure from the mixture by placing the mixture on at least a portion of the castable material, and firing the structure, thereby forming a reinforced ceramic composite.
La présente invention porte sur des pièces d'un moteur à combustion interne, ou autres éléments similaires, et concerne plus particulièrement un collecteur (10) d'échappement composite à matrice céramique renforcée destiné à des applications dans le domaine des moteurs à combustion interne. Cette invention permet de résoudre les problèmes concernant les défaillances dues à un choc thermique, les dégâts provoqués par de faibles impacts, l'érosion, le poids du moteur, et autres problèmes similaires. Cette invention concerne également un procédé de fabrication du collecteur (10), lequel procédé consiste à former un revêtement d'un matériau céramique monolithique coulable et comportant des pores, à remplir ces pores d'une résine polymère pré-céramique, à revêtir les fibres de renfort avec un matériau d'interface, à effectuer un mélange d'une résine polymère pré-céramique et des fibres de renfort revêtues du matériau d'interface, à former une structure en forme de collecteur d'échappement à partir du mélange en disposant ledit mélange sur une partie au moins du matériau coulable, puis à cuire la structure pour obtenir, enfin, un composite céramique renforcé.
