A plurality of polymer layers are stacked together and subjected to a consolidation operation to generate an orthopaedic bearing component. Each layer is formed by longitudinally extending polymer fibers that are placed or woven together to define a predetermined orientation of the fibers. The consolidation operation fuses the layers together while at the same time retaining the predetermined orientation of the fibers.
