A method of fabricating a styrofoam building material and a styrofoam building material fabricated in accordance with the method. A first step involves providing a styrofoam body having an exterior surface and an interior core. A second step involves cutting a slotted opening through the exterior surface into the interior core of the styrofoam body with a hot wire, moving the hot wire within the interior core to define peripheral boundaries of a plug, and then withdrawing the hot wire back through the slotted opening. A third step involves removing the plug from the interior core of the styrofoam body to leave a cavity. A fourth step involves inserting a reinforcing substrate into the cavity. The reinforcing substrate enables the styrofoam building material be held more securely with mechanical fasteners.
