An insulating material mainly containing alumina and having a Na content of a range from 0.07 to 0.5 weight % in terms of Na2O. Such a Na content is fairly high and has conventionally been thought absurd. The insulation resistance at high temperatures and the mechanical strength are unexpectedly not low. The material has a good performance compared to those of conventional insulating materials having Na contents lower than that of the material of the invention. As a result, in place of conventional low-soda alumina, intermediate-soda alumina or plain-soda alumina which are much more inexpensive. The manufacturing cost of an insulator (2) for spark plugs and further the manufacturing cost of a spark plug (100) made thereof can be drastically lowered.

Matériau isolant constitué essentiellement d'alumine et présentant une teneur Na comprise entre 0,07 et 0,5 % en poids exprimée en terme de Na¿2?O. Cette teneur Na est relativement élevée et est habituellement considérée comme étant absurde. La résistance d'isolation à haute température et la résistance mécanique sont loin d'être faibles. Le matériau présente un bon rendement comparé à celui de matériaux isolants classiques présentant des teneurs Na inférieures à celle du matériau de l'invention. Ainsi, à la place d'alumine classique à faible teneur en soude, l'alumine à teneur en soude intermédiaire ou l'amine à forte teneur en soude utilisées sont beaucoup plus coûteuses. Le coût de production d'un isolant (2) pour bougies d'allumage et également le coût de production d'une bougie d'allumage (100) constituée de celui-ci peuvent être réduits considérablement.
