A method is provided for producing hydrogen by fermenting a culture medium containing a sugar and maintained under substantially anaerobic conditions with a bacteria of the genus Clostridium. The bacterium may be Clostridium bifermentans and hydrogen may be produced with an efficiency of at least about 34% relative to the maximum theoretical possible yield. There are also disclosed substantially pure cultures of bacteria of the genus Clostridium which can ferment sugars present in a culture medium at a concentration of between about 1% and 10% under substantially anaerobic conditions to produce hydrogen with an efficiency of at least about 34% of the maximum possible theoretical yield.
La présente invention a trait à un procédé pour la production d'hydrogène par la fermentation d'un milieu de culture contenant un sucre et maintenu dans des conditions sensiblement anaérobie avec une bactérie du genre Clostridium. La bactérie peut être Clostridium fermentans et l'hydrogène peut être produit avec une efficacité égale ou supérieure à environ 34 % par rapport au rendement théorique maximal possible.
