FIBER PLACEMENT COMPACTION PREHEAT SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compaction preheat system consists of an air heater placed just prior to the compaction roller of the fiber placement head. The amount of heat supplied to the composite is determined by a control computer. The controlling computer adjusts the amount of heat being put into the composite by scrutinizing the entire fiber placement process. The amount of preheat needed is determined by the speed of the fiber delivery, type of fiber being used, amount of consolidation desired, and actual temperature of fiber as measured, e.g., by infrared thermometry.
