ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus is described for measuring elongation, compression, and similar forces in structural elements or in machine parts, the lengths of which can be varied. In order to detect even small changes in length in structural elements, using a transportable apparatus, without having to intervene essentially in the structural element, the apparatus has a housing on which two blades which are spaced apart are arranged. Of these, one blade is connected rigidly to the housing and the other blade is supported in the housing so as to be moveable or deflectable in the direction of the change of length of the structural element that is to be measured. Within the housing there is a raising and lowering mechanism which, when the apparatus is lowered, renders attachment magnets active, the magnets then attaching the housing to the structural element that is to be measured by means of magnetic attraction when, at the same time, the tips of the blades dig into the surface of the structural element to be measured. In the raised position of the apparatus, the attachment magnets are rendered inactive and the measuring tips are raised from the surface that is to be measured.
