Apparatus for filling a container (30) with damage- able fluent material, such as a cereal product, comprises a telescopic chute (10), with an end closure bell (16). The chute and bell have independant lowering and raising lines (18, 15) respectively so that the bell can be further low- ered to open the end of the chute when is fully extended. The chute is adapted to be lowered gradually, filling up with material at the same time, the bell (16) then being opened when the chute is fully extended, to allow the material to flow out, and the chute then retracted whilst further material is fed into the container through the chute. This arrangement avoids a damaging initial drop of fragile products onto the uncushioned floor of the container from maximum height as happens on prior filling systems.
