POLYIMIDE SURFACES HAVING ENHANCED ADHESION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a polyimide substrate bearing thereon a disordered amorphous surface layer that provides improved adhesion when said polyimide substrate is used in polymer or metal laminates, wherein said surface layer is formed by the process of: a) providing a polyimide substrate having an ordered amorphous surface zone, and b) irradiating at least a portion of the depth of said ordered amorphous surface zone with radiation from a pulsed energy source that produces pulses of sufficient duration and intensity to heat a portion of said surface zone to a temperature above the glass transition temperature but below the decomposition temperature, thus transforming said zone into an amorphous surface layer, c) rapidly quenching said amorphous layer to a temperature below the glass transition temperature before the molecules comprising said disordered amorphous surface layer can reorient to the ordered amorphous state. The amorphous surface layer has a chemical composition unchanged from and identical to that of the ordered amorphous bulk phase but having physical characteristics that are different from that of the bulk phase. The solubility, coefficient of friction, antireflectivity, and anisotropic conductivity are greater and the density, birefrengence, and ultraviolet polarization are less in the amorphous layer than in the ordered amorphous bulk polymer.
