Diglycidyl ether epoxy resins are reacted with a prepolymer produced from an organic diisocyanate and a bifunctional active hydrogen compound having a soft segment whose terminal isocyanate groups have been blocked to chain-extend the epoxy resin with the prepolymer. The chain-extended epoxy resin is then reacted with a cationic active hydrogen compound alone or in combination with an aliphatic monoalcohol, alkylphenol, glycol monoether or bisphenol to open the terminal epoxy rings of the chain-extended epoxy resin. The modified epoxy resin thus produced is dispersed in an aqueous medium containing a neutralizing agent together with a crosslinker to give a cathodic electrodeposition paint having improved impact strength and other properties.
On fait réagir des résines éther diglycidylique époxy avec un prépolymère obtenu à partir d'un diisocyanate organique et d'un composé à hydrogène actif bifonctionnel, possédant un segment mou dont les groupes isocyanate terminaux ont été bloqués pour allonger la chaîne de la résine époxy avec le prépolymère. On fait ensuite réagir la résine époxy à chaîne plus longue avec un composé à hydrogène actif de type cationique, seul, ou en combinaison avec un monoalcool aliphatique, un alkylphénol, un monoéther de glycol ou un bisphénol, afin d'ouvrir les cycles époxy terminaux de la résine époxy à chaîne plus longue. La résine époxy modifiée ainsi produite est dispersée dans un milieu aqueux contenant un agent neutralisant et un réticulant en donnant une peinture pour électrodéposition à la cathode, possédant une résistance et d'autres propriétés améliorées.
