A power driven mechanical toothbrush (20) is disclosed. A replaceable toothbrush head member (24) has tuft blocks (40) retained generally therewithin and extending laterally outwardly from the cam shaft (42). Each tuft block (40) has at elast one tuft of bristles (52), usually four, secured within the tuft block (40) and extending upwardly therefrom. Each of the bristles (54) has a distal end at a distance from its tuft block (40), and the bristles in each tuft are generally parallel to each other. The toothbrush head member (24) is adapted to receive and retain the tuft blocks in sliding relation therein, so that each tuft block (40) slides line- arly in a direction parallel to the longitudinal tuft axis (53) as guided by guide rails (39) within the head member, between a re- tracted position and an extended position. Each tuft block is driven from its retracted position to its extended position by a rotat- able cam shaft (42).
