Compounds of the formula (I): (see formula I) wherein A1 is L-Tyr; A2 is a .beta.-amino acid; A3 is an achiral amino acid; A4 is L-Phe; and Z is a branched or unbranched C1-8-alkyl, arylC1-8alkyl or an optionally substituted aryl group, or an N- and/or O-protected derivative thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof are disclosed, which are useful as therapeutic agents for treating pain in a subject. Also disclosed is a method for preparing the compounds of formula (I).
