N-butane and molecular oxygen are reacted in a first reactor to form maleic anhydride, the produced maleic anhydride is scrubbed to separate maleic anhydride values, n-butane is added to the scrubber gases and these are reacted in a second reactor to form additional maleic anhydride.

Selon l'invention, on fait réagir du N-butane et de l'oxygène moléculaire dans un premier réacteur afin d'obtenir de l'anhydride maléique ; on lave l'anhydride maléique obtenu afin de séparer les valeurs d'anhydride maléique ; on ajoute du N-butane aux gaz de lavage, puis on les fait réagir dans un second réacteur afin d'obtenir de l'anhydride maléique supplémentaire.
