In a preferred embodiment, the invention comprises a process for preparing tri-O-acetyl-D-erythro-4-pentulosonic acid methyl ester. These compounds are suitable intermediates in the preparation of pyrrolidines and "aza-sugar" analogs of D-ribofuranose.
