ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the safe production of malonic acid anhydride by ozonization of diketene in the presence of a carbonyl compound of the formula: Image (II) wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represent hydrogen, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or an aryl group. Malonic acid anhydride is a highly reactive intermediate reagent for the synthesis of numerous active ingredients for pharmaceutical agents, pesticides or dyes.
