The present invention relates to an assay, and methods for the use thereof, for the assessment and quantification of pesticidal damage to plants, insects or pathogens which comprises an enzyme-deficient microbial culture to which is added the extract of a plant, insect or pathogen in which such damage is suspected. The culture is then allowed a suitable period of growth, and such growth is indicative of the amount of the damage resultant from pesticidal exposure of the plant, insect or pathogen.
