ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of preparing highly absorbent wood pulp without the need for a post-decrystallization step is disclosed which involves the steps of irradiating wood pulp in the presence of air with high energy radiation, e.g., gamma rays, and reacting the irradiated wood pulp with one or more vinyl-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid monomers in an aqueous medium at a temperature in the range of from about ambient temperature to about 100°C. The monomer can be present partially as an alkali metal salt, in which case the ratio of equivalents of alkali metal salt monomers to equivalents of carboxylic acid monomers in the aqueous medium is no greater than about 1.5. In the event the ratio of equivalents of alkali metal salt monomers to equivalents of carboxylic acid monomers in the reaction mixture is less than about 1, the reacted wood pulp is treated with an amount of an alkali metal hydroxide sufficient to provide a ratio of alkali metal carboxylate salt groups to carboxylic acid groups in the reactedwood pulp of at least 1. The ratio of the water retention value to the weight percent of monomers present in the wood pulp, based on the dry weight of wood pulp, is greater than about 0.16.
