A gas generating composition comprising ammonium nitrate and a non-toxic metal oxide which reduces the pressure exponent and enables the composition to sustain combustion at or near atmospheric pressure, thereby improving combustion efficiency. The composition is useful for various purposes, such as inflating a vehicle occupant restraint, i.e., an air bag for an automotive vehicle or aircraft, as well as aircraft escape chutes or the like.

L'invention concerne une composition générant du gaz, qui contient du nitrate d'ammonium et un oxyde métallique non toxique. Cette composition réduit l'exposant de pression et permet à la composition d'entretenir la combustion au niveau ou presque de la pression atmosphérique, favorisant ainsi l'efficacité de la combustion. La composition peut être utilisée à des fins diverses, tel que le gonflage d'un dispositif de retenue d'occupants notamment un air-bag pour véhicule automobile ou aéronef, ou encore des rampes d'évacuation d'aéronefs et autres dispositifs similaires.
