The invention provides methods and apparatus for sterilizing articles. According to one exemplary method, at least one article is placed into a chamber and a vacuum is applied to the chamber. After the pressure within the chamber is sufficiently reduced, water vapor is introduced into the chamber and electromagnetic radiation energy is applied to produce a plasma. In one paticularly preferably aspect, the chamber is allowed to reach a static condition before the water vapor is introduced. In this way, the water vapor is able to equally distribute itself throughout the volume of the chamber so that an equally distributed plasma can be produced upon application of the electromagnetic radiation energy.

L'invention concerne des procédés et un appareil permettant de stériliser des articles. Selon un procédé donné à titre d'exemple, on place un article dans une chambre, puis on fait le vide dans celle-ci. Lorsque la pression dans ladite chambre est suffisamment réduite, on y introduit de la vapeur d'eau et on applique une énergie rayonnante électromagnétique pour produire un plasma. Selon un aspect particulier préféré, on laisse la chambre atteindre un état statique avant d'introduire la vapeur d'eau. Ainsi, la vapeur d'eau peut se répartir de façon régulière dans tout le volume de la chambre de façon qu'un plasma régulièrement réparti puisse être produit lors de l'application de l'énergie rayonnante électromagnétique.
