The invention provides a method of treating a mammal having a cystic disease. This method includes identifying a mam- mal having a cystic disease, and administering to the identified mammal a pharmacologically effective anti-cystic amount of an agent that interferes with the normal functioning of a cytoskeletal component or one that inhibits delivery of membrane proteins to the membrane. The agent is administered in a pharmacologically acceptable carrier, excipient or diluent. The invention also in- cludes an in vitro assay system and use of such a system to identify agents useful in the treatment of cystic diseases.
