A method and system in a fibre channel network (10) for discovering the location of a storage device (20, 30) that does not support the fibre channel address resolution protocol FARP using a FARP broadcast and a storage router (18) as a proxy. The storage router (18) determines the node names of each storage device (20, 30) connected to it and save the node names to a look-up table (22). The router then sends a FARP request to each storage device on the table and for each device that responds, flagging the corresponding node name for that storage device as FARP compatible, and for each device that does not respond, flagging the node name as not being FARP compatible. When a FARP broadcast directed to any of the storage devices is received at the router, the router determines if the device is FARP compatible by accessing the look- up table and if the device is not FARP compatible, sends a reply to the FARP broadcast that contains the physical address of the device.
Système et procédé destinés à un réseau (10) de canaux de fibres optiques qui permettent de découvrir l'emplacement d'une mémoire (20, 30) elle-même non compatible avec le protocole de résolution d'adresse sur canaux de fibres optiques (FARP) au moyen d'une diffusion FARP et d'un routeur (18) de mémoire intervenant en tant que mandataire. Le routeur (18) de mémoire détermine les noms de noeud de chaque mémoire (20, 30) connectée à ce dernier et sauvegarde les noms de noeud dans une table de consultation (22). Le routeur envoie ensuite une requête FARP à chaque mémoire contenue dans la table, et pour chaque mémoire qui répond, identifie le nom de noeud correspondant à cette même mémoire comme étant -ompatible FARP, et pour chaque mémoire qui ne répond pas, identifie le nom de noeud comme n'étant pas compatible FARP. Lorsqu'une diffusion FARP envoyée aux mémoires est reçue par le routeur, ce dernier détermine si la mémoire est -ompatible FARP en appelant la table de consultation et, si la mémoire est non compatible FARP, envoie à la diffusion FARP une réponse qui contient l'adresse physique de la mémoire.
