Compounds having the formula: (see fig.I) and fuel soluble salts thereof; wherein R1 is nitro or --(CH2)x--NR4R5, wherein R4 and R5 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl and x is 0 or 1; R2 is hydrogen, hydroxy, nitro, or --NR6R7 wherein R6 and R7 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl and R is a polyalkyl or polyalkyloxycarbonyl group. The compounds of formula I are useful as fuel additives for the prevention and control of engine deposits.
