Abstract of the Disclosure A data processing apparatus includes an arithmetic processor, a system control unit, a main storage, and a diagnostic processor. The data processing apparatus performs an initialization request from the diagnostic processor with respect to the main storage. The system control unit includes a comparator for comparing the content of a store address register with that of a capacity register so as to check whether a value of the store address register exceeds a value of the capacity register, and first and second AND circuits for respectively disabling an output from the comparator to the arithmetic processor and enabling the output from the comparator to the diagnostic processor when an initialization flag is set. The diagnostic processor can detect the end of initialization of the main storage when the diagnostic processor receives the comparison output representing that the store address exceeds the capacity of the main storage.
