The present invention relates to a system and method for selling lottery tickets and playing a lottery whereby lottery players are given the additional option to play the lottery as part of a group (a "group play option") when purchasing their lottery ticket, even as a randomly generated group, thus giving each player of this group much better odds of winning lottery prizes, while still allowing for players to play individually by themselves. Essentially, players playing in a "group" combine their lottery ticket numbers together, whereby if there are any winners from amongst the lottery ticket numbers "pooled" by that group, the members of that group share in any winnings associated therewith.
