The invention provides a machine for grinding tree stumps to a level below the surface of soil in which the stump is located. The machine comprises a sled structure including lugs for releasably coupling the sled with pivot pins to a moveable boom of a backhoe or other earth moving machine. The sled has skids or skiis for guiding the apparatus over the surface of soil adjacent to the stump with the moveable boom. A drive unit is mounted on the sled having power transmission and a self contained fuel source. A stump grinding wheel is journaled to the sled for rotation about a substantially horizontal axis and coupled to the power transmission of the drive unit. The wheel has a stump abrading surface with replaceable teeth which shred, chip or grind the wood of the stump and dig a trench in the soil approximately 6-9 inches deep. Preferably, the sled comprises a rectangular platform and two elongate skids each extending downwardly from one of two opposing sides of the platform thereby defining an inverted channel shaped sled having a forward and a rearward open end. The grinding wheel is mounted between said skids with the axis transverse to said opposing sides. A guard flap is hinged to the platform covering at least one open end, and the skids have planar inner surfaces to contain the spewing of wood and soil particles caused by the stump grinding operation.
Cette invention concerne une machine à déchiqueter les souches d'arbres abattus jusquà une certaine profondeur sous le niveau du sol où elles se trouvent. La machine comprend un caisson monté sur patins servant à son guidage à la surface du sol entourant la souche à déchiqueter. Ce caisson comprend des pattes de fixation servant à son montage amovible et articulé en bout de flèche d'une pelle mécanique ou autre matériel de terrassement. Il porte également un moteur, un réservoir de combustible et un moyen de transmission de puissance. Une roue déchiqueteuse à axe sensiblement horizontal est montée à tourillon dans le caisson et couplée à la transmission du moteur. Cette roue comporte des couteaux remplaçables qui déchiquettent la souche tout en creusant une tranchée d'environ 6 à 9 pouces de profondeur. De préférence, le caisson comprend une plate-forme rectangulaire et une paire de patins allongés formant ses deux parois latérales orientées vers le bas à partir des rives latérales opposées de ladite plate-forme. Cette disposition constructive donne un caisson en forme de U inversé ouvert à l'avant et à l'arrière, la roue déchiqueteuse étant montée entre lesdits patins sur un arbre transversal. Une bavette articulée à la plate-forme recouvre au moins un des deux bouts ouverts du caisson et les patins présentent une paroi intérieure plane servant à contenir les copeaux et la terre projetés par la roue déchiqueteuse.
