The present invention relates to a method for removing cells of a lymphoid malignancy from a mixed cellular composition using a virus that selectively replicates in cells of the lymphoid malignancy. A variety of viruses can be used to practice the invention, including but not limited to reovirus, adenovirus, and herpesvirus. The invention is particularly useful for purging mixed cellular compositions comprising hematopoietic stem of cells of lymphoid malignancies prior to reintroduction or transplantation into an animal.
