A device and method generation of a noise signal while drilling a hole in the ground, such as a well for oil and gas. The device consists of a knocker sleeve (6) that is movably restrained on the shaft of drill bit. When the force applied on the knocker sleeve overcomes the restraining force, the knocker sleeve moves axially relative to the shaft of the drill; and comes in contact with a noise generating surface, such as a bit head (18). The noise generated can be detected by an appropriate device and analyzed to obtain information regarding the geology of the surface being drilled.
