ABSTRACT A process for producing a compound represented by the formula (II), which comprises reacting an epoxy compound represented by the formula (I) with an alcohol, wherein the reaction is carried out under a basic condition. Image (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a protective group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group, R3, R4, R5 and R6 represent that each of R3 and R4, and R5 and R6 forms a double bond, or R4 and R5 form a double bond, and R3 and R6 bond to dienophile which is capable of protecting a conjugated double bond, and R7 represents a lower alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or a lower hydroxyalkyl group wherein the hydroxyll group may be protected. The present invention produces better yields than prior art and needs no complicated protecting, and it also relates to a process for synthesizing intermediates of vitamin D3 derivatives, which is suitable for a large scale preparation.
