2149641 9411518 PCTABS00032 A process for producing .alpha.-N-acetylgalactosaminidase by expressing a DNA sequence derived from human placenta encoding .alpha.-N-acetylgalactosaminidase in a recombinant host microorganism transformed with an expression vector containing DNA sequence and isolating transformants having .alpha.-N-acetylgalactosaminidase expression. The isolated transformants are then cultured and .alpha.-N-acetylgalactosaminidase is purified from the culture media. The recombinantly produced .alpha.-N-acetylgalactosaminidase is used to convert A, B and AB blood types into O blood type.
