Dimethyl ether is converted to formaldehyde using a supported catalyst comprising molybdenum and/or vanadium oxides. The surface density of the oxide(s) ranges from greater than that for the isolated monomeric oxides upwards, so long as there is a substantial absence of bulk crystalline molybdenum and/or vanadium oxide(s). Conversion and selectivity to formaldehyde are improved as compared to data reported for known catalysts. Also disclosed is a supported catalyst comprising molybdenum and/or vanadium oxides wherein the support comprises one or more reducible metal oxides, preferably a layer or layers of one or more reducible metal oxides disposed on the surface of a particulate alumina or zirconia support.

Selon la présente invention, l'oxyde de méthyle est converti en formaldéhyde à l'aide d'un catalyseur supporté comprenant un oxyde de molybdène et/ou de vanadium. La densité surfacique de ces oxydes varie en augmentant à partir d'une valeur supérieure à celle des oxydes monomères isolés tant que l'on observe une absence substantielle d'oxyde de molybdène et/ou de vanadium en masse à l'état cristallin. Lorsqu'on compare les résultats obtenus avec les données recueillies pour des catalyseurs connus, on observe que cette invention améliore la conversion et la sélectivité en formaldéhyde. Cette invention porte également sur un catalyseur supporté comprenant un oxyde de molybdène et/ou vanadium, le support comprenant un ou plusieurs oxydes métalliques réductibles, de préférence une ou plusieurs couches d'un ou plusieurs oxydes métalliques réductibles déposées sur la surface d'un substrat d'alumine ou de zircone en particules.
