Abandoned wells are typically sealed by cement plug means to prevent groundwatercontamination. In most cases the placement and competence of the cement plugs are regulated by various government agencies and tagging of the plugs to verify depth and competence is normally a requirement of such agencies. Current tagging methods include lowering the drill string to the top surface of the plug. This method entails a considerable amount of waiting time for the cement to set-up and high costs associated with such wait- ing time. A new method of tagging well plugs is comprised of a plurality of ultrasonic transducers arranged in transmit/receive pairs to form a plurality sensor which is incor- porated into a conventional drill string collar and, when activated, provides a measure- ment of the distance from the upper surface of the cement plug to the bottom of the collar thus verifying that the plug is in fact where it is supposed to be and at the correct depth. Since no mechanical contact with the plug is required the need to wait for cement set-up is significantly reduced and with it the attendant costs.
