The invention relates to a method of combusting tallow, and particularly tallow that may be contaminated with the prion protein considered to be responsible for spreading the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) infection in cattle, in a standard high-speed compression ignition engine. The invention also extends to combustion of other animal/vegetable-based fats and oils, particularly waste cooking oils which are at risk of contamination by toxic chemicals which may potentially enter the food chain. The heat and power produced by the engine may then be used to generate electricity. In accordance with the invention, the tallow etc. is combusted in an enriched oxygen atmosphere in the combustion chamber of the engine.

L'invention concerne un procédé de combustion de suif, notamment de la suif qui a pu être contaminée par la protéine de prion que l'on tient pour responsable de la propagation de l'infection par l'encéphalopathie spongiforme bovine (BSE) chez les animaux, la combustion ayant lieu dans un moteur standard à combustion par compression. L'invention couvre également la combustion d'autres graisses et huiles d'origine animale et/ou végétale, en particulier de la friture usagée, qui présentent des risques de contamination par des substances chimiques toxiques ayant pu se glisser dans la chaîne alimentaire. On peut utiliser la chaleur et l'énergie générées par ce moteur pour produire de l'électricité. Selon l'invention, la suif et les autres graisses sont brûlées dans une atmosphère enrichie d'oxygène dans la chambre de combustion du moteur.
