A sanitary napkin has a lifting member having a plurality of pleats. The pleats can be formed by differentially elongating elastic elements and joining the elastic elements at spaced apart locations along their lengths. The pleats have a Z-direction height for providing Z-direction displacement of a portion of the topsheet relative to the backsheet.
