Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA) eliminates or reduces disadvantages or problems associated with prior valve actuators. The Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA) includes a largely symmetrical dual Cranks design in which a pair of Cranks drives each pinion. Each Crank is a part of bearing assembly, the elements of which are shielded by a cooperating bearing housing and bearing retainer. The Cranks are themselves shielded by bolted doors that protect the Cranks from foreign objects and prevent the Cranks from being thrown from the valve actuator. The two bearing assemblies of the valve actuator are coupled to one another through a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder, which, when actuated, moves the Cranks relative to one another to rotate the valve shaft to open or close the valve that is being actuated. The present invention is advantageous because of the placement and operations of the Cranks. Because the Cranks are located on opposite sides of the valve actuator, driving the Cranks by applying force to the Cranks from opposite sides of the valve in order to be actuated allows for balanced couple actuation and does not introduce substantial side loading effects on the pinion. Also, as the whole Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA) body is fixed onto the valve body, there is no load or any weight onto valve shaft. The Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA) is advantageous because it is able to rotate in a drill string with the valve itself and therefore it is not needed for rotary seals to be included in an attempt to accommodate rotation of the valve relative to rotation of the Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA). The Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA) of the present invention is also advantageous because many of the most critical components of the valve actuator are shielded. A bolted door shields the Cranks and each of the bearing assemblies includes a bearing housing and bearing retainer that cooperate to enclose the bearings of the bearing assemblies. The Rotational Valve Actuator (RVA) also accommodates the manual activation of the valve A key can be inserted in the hex hole of the Cranks. Rotation of the Cranks causes the valve central shaft to rotate what causes opening or closing the valve.
