A method of eliciting an immune response against an antigen in a vertebrate subject, the method comprising the steps of providing an antigen-adjuvant composition comprising the antigen and a substantially non-toxic adjuvant molecule having biological activity in mucosal tissues, and administering said antigen-adjuvant composition to the vertebrate subject in a manner such that initial contact occurs in mucosal tissue of the vertebrate subject, whereby an immune response is elicited. Cytokines are preferred adjuvants. Preferred cytokines are interleukin-1.alpha. (IL-1.alpha.) and interleukin-1.beta. (IL- 1.beta.).

L'invention concerne un procédé qui déclenche une réaction immunitaire contre un antigène chez un vertébré, le procédé comportant les étapes consistant à prévoir une composition d'antigène-adjuvant qui renferme l'antigène et une molécule d'adjuvant sensiblement non toxique possédant une activité biologique dans des tissus de muqueuse, et administrer ladite composition d'antigène-adjuvant au vertébré de sorte qu'un contact initial se produit dans le tissu de muqueuse du vertébré, et déclenche une réaction immunitaire. Les adjuvants préférés sont des cytokines. L'interleukine 1.alpha. (IL-1.alpha.) et l'interleukine 1-.beta. (IL-1.beta.) constituent des cytokines préférées.
