The invention relates to a rotary drum (12) of an axial compressor having a web made of composite material. The drum (12) comprises an upstream flange (20) for fastening the fan, a segment (22) having a sealing flange upstream (13), a segment (24) with a groove (14) adapted to receive the bases of the vane of a first row of vanes, a segment (27) with a groove (16) adapted to receive the bases of the vane of a second row of vanes, and a segment (30) with a groove (18) adapted to receive the bases of the vane of a third row of vanes. These segments or elements are made of conventional metallic material mostly for reasons of mechanical resistance to the centrifugal forces. They are connected to each other with web segments (21, 23, 26, 29) made of composite material. The ends of the metallic segments have a dovetail-shaped section in a longitudinal plane that is able to ensure a positive connection with the composite material.
