An air-adjustable, lumbar back support assembly with a mattress is provided, comprising an air-adjustable, impervious envelope containing an open-cell, foam material. The envelope is insertable into at least one support area of the mattress and adjustably positioned therein for support of a user's back. When the envelope is inflated it produces a bulge on top of the mattress and this bulge is adjustably positioned under a portion of the user's back requiring treatment. This results in a reduction of back stresses and back discomfort, and a more restful sleep. Initially, the envelope is usually pressurized with air at a low level, but as treatment progresses, the envelope can be increasingly pressurized to provide a greater support as the user becomes more accustomed to the treatment. The mattress can be used in its regular form, without the back support, or it can be used as an assembly with the back support for ongoing treatment, or to prevent future problems, as required.
