A level gauge for a liquid storage tank has a float that rises and falls as changes occur in a level of liquid within the interior of the storage tank. A magnetic counterweight is disposed within a vertical portion of a tubular sealed housing. The magnetic counterweight is connected by a cable to the float. A vertically aligned guide track is provided in parallel spaced relation to the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing. A free floating magnetic indicator member is positioned within the guide track. The magnetic indicator member is of the same magnetic polarity as the magnetic counterweight. The indicator member is magnetically repulsed by the magnetic counterweight and thereby maintains a constant positional relationship relative to the magnetic counterweight.
