A process is described for the preparation of a 3-halo- or -pseudohaloalkylsilane ester of the formula: Image (I) (in which R is optionally halogenated C1-18 alkyl, R1 is hydrogen or optionally halogenated C1-18 alkyl, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen, aryl, halogen or optionally halogenated C1-18 alkyl, R4 is C1-10 alkyl optionally containing an ether bond, X is fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, cyano, isocyanate, isothio- cyanate or azido radical and n is 0, 1 or 2). The process involves a reaction of a hydrosilation of an unsaturated aliphatic compound of the formula: Image (II) with a compound of the formula: HSiRn(OR4)3-n (III) in the presence of a catalyst comprising elemental iridium or an iridium compound. The catalyst is prepared in the form of a solution or suspension thereof in the unsaturated aliphatic compound (II) alone or in admixture thereof with the compound (III), either as or in combination with an inert solvent or with the desired product (I). The silane ester (I) is useful for example as a silane coupling agent or an intermediate for producing other organosilane compounds.
