Novel retinoic acid-containing topical compositions in the form of creams, lotions, gels, and the like, are disclosed. These compositions contain a urethane compound having a molecular weight of up to about 60,000, prepared by reacting approximately two moles of a hydroxy-terminated linear alkylene or polyalkylene glycol with approximately one mole of a monomeric organic diisocyanate. The presence of the urethane compound leads to decreased percutaneous transmission of the retinoic acid, resulting in reduced skin irritation but undiminishes therapeutic effectiveness of the retinoic acid when compared to retinoic acid-containing topical formulations otherwise identical except for the absence of a urethane compound. The compositions of this invention can be used to treat acne vulgaris and ameliorate photoaging of the skin, to retard and reverse the effects of senile keratosis, and to treat a variety of other skin conditions, such as hyperpigmentation and psoriasis, hitherto considered unsuitable for treatment with retinoic acid.

Ces compositions contiennent un composé à base d'uréthanne ayant un poids moléculaire allant jusqu'à environ 60 000, préparé en faisant réagir environ deux moles d'un alkylène ou d'un polyalkylène glycol linéaire à terminaison hydroxy avec environ une mole d'un diisocyanate organique monomère. La présence du composé à base d'uréthanne conduit à une diminution de la transmission percutanée de l'acide rétinoïque, entraînant une diminution de l'irritation de la peau sans réduire l'efficacité thérapeutique de l'acide rétinoïque en comparaison avec les formulations topiques contenant de l'acide rétinoïque identiques à l'exception de l'absence d'un composé à base d'uréthanne. Les compositions dévoilées peuvent être utilisées pour traiter l'acné simple et atténuer le photovieillissement de la peau, retarder et inverser les effets de la kératose sénile, ainsi que pour traiter une diversité d'autres conditions dermatologiques, comme l'hyperpigmentation et le psoriasis que l'on considère jusqu'à présent comme ne se prêtant pas à un traitement avec l'acide rétinoïque.
