An accommodating intraocular lens (32) to be implanted within the natural capsular bag (20) of a human eye from which the natural lens matrix has been removed through an anterior capsule opening in the bag circumferentially surrounded by an anterior capsular remnant (22). During a postoperative healing period following surgery, the anterior capsular remnant fuses to the posterior capsule of the bag by fibrosis (30) about haptics (36) on the implanted lens while the ciliary muscle is maintained in its relaxed state by a cycloplegic to prevent dislocation of the lens, and the lens is deflected rearwardly by the fibrosing anterior capsular remnant to a distant vision position against the elastic posterior capsule (24) of the bag in which the posterior capsule is stretched rearwardly. After fibrosis is complete, natural brain-induced contraction and relaxation of the ciliary muscle relaxes and stretches the fibrosed anterior remnant and increases and reduces vitreous pressure in the eye to effect vision accommodation by the remnant, the posterior capsule, and vitreous pressure. A method of utilizing the intraocular lens to provide a patient with vision accommodation.
La présente invention concerne une lentille intraoculaire à accommodation (32) à implanter dans la poche capsulaire d'un oeil humain dont la matrice lenticulaire naturelle a été retirée par un orifice de la capsule antérieure, la poche étant entourée en périphérie par un reste de capsule antérieure (22). Pendant une période de guérison postopératoire suivant l'intervention chirurgicale, le reste de capsule antérieure vient se fusionner avec la capsule postérieure du sac par fibrose (30) autour des haptiques (36) sur la lentille implantée alors que le muscle ciliaire est maintenu à l'état détendu au moyen d'un cytoplégique de façon à empêcher la dislocation de la lentille. Ensuite, on fait subir à la lentille une déflexion antéro-postérieure au niveau du reste capsulaire antérieur en cours de fibrose, et ce, jusqu'à une position de vision lointaine, pour toucher la capsule postérieure élastique (24) de la poche dans laquelle la capsule postérieure est tirée vers l'arrière. Une fois que la fibrose est achevée, la contraction et la détente du muscle ciliaire naturellement commandées par le cerveau relâche et étire le reste antérieur fibrosé, ce qui augmente ou diminue la pression vitreuse dans l'oeil de façon à obtenir une accommodation de la vision sous l'action du reste, de la capsule postérieure, et de la pression vitreuse. L'invention concerne également un procédé d'utilisation de la lentille intraoculaire permettant d'offrir au patient une accommodation de la vision.
