Description

Dirigibles are known as "lighter than air" ships because the interior of their envelopes is filled with either hydrogen or helium, both of which are lighter than air. The Vacuum Dir- igible takes the concept one step further and uses air pujmps to create a maximum vacuum within the vessel. This has advantages over both hydrogen and helium. The danger of explos- ions and fire which led to the disaster of the Hindenburg ended the development nd use of air- ships for generations. Helium is expensive and may not be available in sufficient quantities to permit widespread use of the craft. Operation of Vacuum Dirigibles would be simpler than either hydrogen or helium dirigibles, as it merely draws air into the envelope to descend, or expels it to rise. The helium and hydrogen dirigibles have the advantage that those gases equalize air pressure inside and outside the envelope, where as the Vacuum Dirigible's envelope and hull would have to be strong enough to withstand atmospheric pressure. Modern plastics such as Kelvar would solve the problem for the envelope, and I understand there are carbon-based structural materials which would save weight if a reinforced hull is required. Most of the design of the Vacuum Dirigible would be the same as a standard dirigible including the propulsion system, steering, and the gondola providing space for equipment, pas- sengers and cargo, but it would not require space for ballast. The Vacuum Dirigible and its mooring system would habve special features to facilitate landing and taking off.
