A succession of containers passing along a filling line are weighted empty at a tare station (4), filled at a filling station (6) and weighted full at a gross station (7). The tare and gross weight for each container are input to processing means (20) which controls the filling station (6), by establishing a set point for the filling means (20). The processing means calculates for each con- tainer the net weight or volume of its contents and averages the contents of a batch of containers. Should the average contents fall outside a predetermined tolerance of a target weight, the processing means applies a correction factor to the set point of the filling means to obtain a new-set point for a subsequent batch of containers.
