Disclosed are substituted phthalimido-cinnamic acid derivatives of formula (I), wherein R1 is H, C1-C4-alkyl; R2 is H, halogen; R3 is CN, NO2, halogen, C1-C6-alkyl, C1-C6-alkyl halide, C1-C6-alkoxy, C1-C6-alkoxy halide; R4 is H, CN, NO2, halogen, C1-C6-alkyl; R5 is H, C1-C6-alkyl, C2-C6-alkenyl, C2-C6- alkinyl, substituted C1-C6-alkyl; R6 is one of the radicals indicated under R5 or CN, NO2, C1-C6-alkoxy, C1-C6-alkoxy halide, C1-C6-alkyl thio, C1-C6 alkyl thio halide, C3-C6-cycloalkyl, sustituted alkyl, C3-C6-alkenyl halide, (C1-C6- alkoxy)-carbonyl, COOH, (C1-C6-alkyl amino)carbonyl, di-(C1-C6-alkyl)amino carbonyl, (C1-C6-alkyl) carbonyl, (C1-C6-alkyl halide) carbonyl, optionally substituted aryl, hetaryl, aryl C1-C6 alkyl or hetaryl C1-C6 alkyl; or R5 and R6 together are an alkylene chain, in which a methylene unit can be substituted a C1-C4-alkyl imino group; R7 is H, C1-C6-alkyl, C3-C6-alkenyl, C3- C6 alkinyl, C2-C6 alkyl halide, C1-C6 cyanoalkyl, C1-C6 alkoxy C2-C6 alkyl, C1- C6-alkyl thio C2-C6 alkyl, (C1-C6-alkoxy)carbonyl-C1-C6-alkyl, optionally substituted phenyl or benzyl; X is O, S or N(R8), as well as the salts of formula (I). Disclose also is their use as herbicides and for desication/defoliation of plants.
