A method and apparatus for processing a magnetic transducer. A gallium ion beam precisely defines pole tip width of the magnetic transducer. The precision pole tip widths provide a transducer that may record correspondingly precise track widths on a magnetic storage medium, such as a rotating disk. Subsequent to the ion milling process, the invention restores the magnetically conductive properties of the pole tip region, which may be degraded as a result of the ion milling process, by means of a lapping process.

Méthode et appareil de fabrication de transducteurs magnétiques. Un faisceau d'ions au gallium définit précisément la largeur de la pièce polaire du transducteur magnétique. Les largeurs de précision des pièces polaires permettent d'obtenir des transducteurs pouvant enregistrer, sur un support magnétique comme un disque rotatif, des pistes dont les largeurs de précision sont équivalentes à celles des pièces polaires. La présente invention permet également de restaurer, au moyen d'un procédé de rodage, les caractéristiques de conduction magnétique de la pièce polaire, qui peuvent avoir subies une dégradation résultant de l'usinage au faisceau d'ions.
