POLYOLEFIN PRODUCTS AND METHODS OF MAKING Abstract of the Disclosure A process for making a filament yarn and products thereof in which a polypropylene resin having a molecular weight distribution of less than about 7 and a melt flow between about 20 and about 60 is melt spun, a finish is applied and the filaments are taken up at a speed of at least about 800 meters per minute, preferably at least about 1200 meters per minute and also preferably between about 800 and about 1200 meters per minute. The resultant filament yarn has a substantially improved birefringence, a substantially improved tenacity and a substantially improved elongation, as compared with filament yarns melt spun from conventional polypropylene resins having molecular weight distributions above ? and resin melt flows below 20. The filament yarns are further improved by treating the filament yarns to improve the bulkiness thereof, as by simultaneously draw-false twist texturing while reversing the direction of twist of alternate yarns and plying the yarns in an interlacing jet, sequentially draw-texturing the filament yarns as by disc-texturing, jet texturing (with a jet directed in the general : direction of travel of the yarn or a jet direct at an angle of 90° to the yarn), simultaneously draw-texturing as by draw-false twist texturing and crimping. The filament yarn can also be further improved by treating the filament yarn to improve the coherency thereof as by heat setting, entangling, heat setting and entangling, interlacing, twist-drawing and draw-twisting.
