A B S T R A C T An apparatus and method for sterilizing particles in an autoclave with an atmosphere of formaldehyde and water so that the sterilized articles have tolerable quantities of residue of formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde thereon. In the process, formalin is used which is transformed to a gaseous condition and supplied to the autoclave.
