ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Paper is provided with an antimicrobial finish by applying a microbicidally active phenol derivative having the formula Image wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 which may be the same or different. are selected from the group of hydrogen, halogen and lower alkyl, in addition to which R1 may also represent Image wherein R2, R3, R4' and R5, which may be the same or different are selected from the group of hydrogen, halogen and lower alkyl, and R3 may also represent the carboxyl group (-COOH) and R5 may also represent phenyl, to an aqueous pulp suspension, said phenol derivative being added to said suspension in the form of a phenolate salt thereof with quaternary ammonium ions in an organic solvent.
