ABSTRACT Polymerisation of cycloelkenes in the presence of a mixture of a molybdenum or tungsten compound with an organo-aluminium compound as catalyst and an organic sulphonyl halide (e.g. benzene sulphonyl chloride) or an inorganic sulphuryl halide (e.g. SO2Cl2) as activator. Thus, high conversions of cyclo- pentene to polypentenamer having a high trans-content can be achieved, even in the presence of diluents.
